I recall reading somewhere that you can build a 6.0 LS out of full size Chevy van pretty cheap and it will be on par with Vette motor.

Agreed. The engines are close enough, but the Chevy Van ones are vastly cheaper.

Is this a real thing you're planning on doing or a mere musing? Because I wholly support both.

My K1500 has been begging for a more powerful motor.

You are not alone in thinking this is an awful yet genius idea. Fortunately, you're in luck, Astro Vans are on a GM G-Body chassis (same as: El Camino, Monte Carlo, S-10, Blazer, and many more) so putting a GM V8 into that chassis is rather straight forward. I encourage you with all if my confidence to proceed.

I wish I could do this, maybe sometime in the future. Puts some guts into this gutless old thing!

The want is so strong with this one and the fact that it's built on the G-Body makes me REALLY want to. Now to just accumulate the funds and ability to do so.

As a former fellow GM 4.3l owner, I had my dreams too. I had a 2nd gen 2 door Blazer. My big budget goof-ball dream was to make it a Baja capable truck with LONG travel suspension and an LS..... IN THE BACK. A mid-engine Blazer trophy truck. Then rust happened.

Rust always has to ruin everything, doesn't it?

One more reason for me to GTFO of the midwest. We can't have nice things.

You don't even need an LS3. A coworker has a Sonoma with a 5.3L (I forget the RPO) swapped in that he bought for $600. There's obviously more to it than that and he's got probably close to $5k into it by now but for a running, driving, RELIABLE vehicle, less than $1k is pretty easy to accomplish. If you buy a motor and it's sitting around, you will be pretty motivated to put it in. Also, you don't need to buy a built transmission, new front clip, paint, body work like he did.
